What is Coir?
Coir is the fiber extracted from the outer husks of coconuts and thus you will still hear it referred to as "coco mats" or "coconut matting". Coir matting is a centuries old craft with the vast majority of the world"s production based in the Alleppey region in Kerala in the south western part of India.
What makes Coir different? Coir products are 100% natural. Coir carpeting is an "In-fashion" furnishing accessory, hardwearing, attractive, warm underfoot, sound insulating, mothproof and rot & fungi resistant, flame retardant, anti-static, and with regular treatment far more easily kept clean than its detractors would suggest. Coir fiber is naturally hygroscopic, breathing in and giving out atmosphere moisture, thus helping to maintain an equable humidity in the home. This is also the reason why it is always advisable to fully adhere the material to the sub-floor to avoid stretching or shrinkage. The material may either be stuck down direct or in conjunction with one of the property underlay systems, It is recommended a skilled carpet layer is always employed.
